http://www.LawyerShop.com — DUI accidents are costly, not only in terms of fines and fees but also due to the time in jail and the death toll involved. MADD has fought to inform the public on the repercussions of drinking and driving. But still 30% of Americans will be involved in an alcohol related accident in their life-time. Attorney Rex Parris encourages people to think about the consequences of a DUI. For more legal news, or to find a lawyer in your area, please visit http://www …

we need to make people afraid to get a dui, because in addition to education, that is the only way people are going to really get serious about not drinking and driving. i dont believe that putting people in jail for 10-20-30 years if they happen to hurt or kill someone is a deterent to drinking and driving on a personal level or for others. i dont believe human beings worry about “worst case scenario” as a general rule.

i have tremendous sympathy for those who lose loved ones to drunk driving accidents. but i feel as tho we are not attacking the root of the problem. i dont beleive people get into a car drunk thinking “i could kill or injure someone, i better think about this”. maybe some do. most think “i could get a dui and lose my lisence”. but despite what this video claims, the penalties are not stiff for dui’s. therefore, many people dont fear the consequences of getting caught.

of course, no would in power would ever agree to my mandatory jail time plan, cause it would mean there is no wiggle room for them if they get caught. and therein lies the problem. alot of lip service is paid to “getting tough on drunk drivers”. but the fact is, we only “get tough” when someone is injured or killed, which is illogical. as i said before, it is all attempted murder or its not. how is it that there are people out in society with 7-8 dui’s on record? how is that getting tough?

i believe that we should institute a nationwide mandatory sentence of 1 year in jail for first time dui. second time dui, 2 years, 3rd time, 3 years and so on. if u kill or seriously injure someone in the process of a first time dui, u get say 2 years on top of the dui offense, for a total of 3 years in jail. that is significant jail time and more than many get for dui related death. that way, all serve time. no parole. no exceptions. celebreties, politicians, wealthy people all do time.

the reason that there is still alot of drinking and driving in this country, in my opinion, is that the penalties for dui’s dont scare anyone. yes, its a total drag to have your lisence taken away. and some of the fines can be a hardship. but those “penalties” clearly dont worry most offenders, especially those who have never had a dui before. we cannot claim to be truly serious about stopping drinking and driving unless we are willing to give mandatory jail time for first time dui’s.

deaths related to dui accidents are tragic. however, if we are going to label drunk driving related fatalities as “attempted murder”, then all dui regardless of the outcome, must be labeled attempted murder. in other words, 1st time dui offenders who injure no one must be charged with attempted murder. i dont happen to believe in this. but u cant have it both ways. its all attempted murder, or its not.
