A poem from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers). I didn’t make this poem, I made this video to give attention to the danger of driving drunk, you could not only take a persons life but yours also.

The USA has one of the worst DUI driving accident rates in the developed world while having lower to mid-range rates of alcohol consumption.

The UK has a DUI accident rate less than half the USA, higher alcohol consumption per capita and more or less unlimited 24 hour access to alcohol for teenagers The crime of DUI manslaughter does not exist in legislations outside the USA and the sentence of causing death by dangerous driving is correspondingly lower, usually 3-4 years for a first offence.

Don’t drive under the influence

In California, in 2007, 1,155 people were killed in drunk driving crashes.
California has 310,971 drivers on the road with 3 or more DUI convictions.
The state missed an opportunity to reduce drunk driving fatalities this year. Assembly Member Mike Feuer (D-Los Angeles) introduced a bill requiring ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers. Unfortunately, the bill did not pass. MADD and its supporters will be back again next year to push for this critical drunk driving legislation.

In Texas, in 2007, 1,292 people were killed in drunk driving crashes — more than any other state. Despite having less than two-thirds the population of California, it still has more drunk driving fatalities.
To improve, Texas must pass legislation allowing for sobriety checkpoints and mandating ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers — something it failed to do in 2007.

In Wisconsin, in 2007, 313 people were killed in drunk driving crashes — an increase in drunk driving fatalities from 2006 — when it was the worst state in the country for drunk driving.
Wisconsin is the only state in the country where first offense drunk driving is a civil infraction, not a crime.
The state’s lack of seriousness on drunk driving, which also shows in its lack of sobriety checkpoints and effective interlock law, costs precious lives each year.

In South Carolina, in 2007, 463 people were killed in drunk driving crashes.
South Carolina — the third worst state in the country for drunk driving — has had opportunities over the past three years to fix the loopholes in their drunk driving law, which is one of the least effective in the nation. However, defense attorneys in the South Carolina legislature have consistently stopped any meaningful reform of their drunk driving law; squandering the potential to save lives.

I remember reading this in grade 8 for our poetry contest, I found this in the Chicken Noodle Soup for the Teenage Soul. I remembered when I was done saying the poem and I looked up, like 10 people were crying, which is really surprising since my class size was 27 kids.

    A great poem.

Thank you very much MrHappy3434. Don’t thank me though, thank MADD for making this poem and bringing peoples attention too all the moms, dads, aunts, uncles, cousin, husbands, wives and children that are taken from their families each year from something, that can be avoided.

I find this a beautiful poem, too. It’s very powerful. The world needs more people like you. It’s sad, but the truth can be sad. This can be what happens when you drink. Thank you for posting this.

One thing I alway’s wondered to myself. Why can the liquor companies advertise while the tobacco companies can’t. Maybe MADD should put some effort into eliminating the advertising rights like what happened to the tobacco companies.

Sappy poem! I have lost loved ones from dui drivers and you can make all the laws in the world and it won’t change people from drinking and driving. It’s sad, but true. For example: Why do we lock our doors of our homes? There are laws against entering a house unlawfully. The lock is there to keep people honest. If someone really want’s to break in (or drive drunk) they are going to it. MADD has done great things over the decades, but the dui deaths haven’t gone down.

This poem was in Chicken Noodle Soup for the Teenage Soul. It was changed a little (saying daddy’s girl), but it’s the same.
